What is BIIAB?

BIIAB is the awarding body of BII, which is the professional body for the licensed retail industry. BIIAB specialises in developing and awarding qualifications to support people at all levels of the industry. This includes qualifications for everyone from bar and retail staff to skilled business managers.

Course Description

Who is the course for?

Anyone authorising the retail sale of alcohol in licensed premises including:

  • Pubs/bars
  • Off-licences
  • Nightclubs
  • Hotels
  • Supermarkets
  • Leisure parks
  • Restaurants
  • Casinos/bingo halls
  • Convenience stores
  • Florists
  • Sports and social clubs
  • Entertainment establishments


What does the qualification cover?

It covers the licensing law and the social responsibilities attached to authorising the retail sale of alcohol in England and Wales. The areas covered are:

  • The roles, responsibilities and functions of licensing authorities within the framework of the licensing objectives
  • The application process for a personal licence
  • The role and legal responsibilities of the personal licence holder, and the penalties relating to failure to comply with the law
  • The premises licence
  • The content and purpose of operating schedules
  • The role and duties of the designated premises supervisor
  • Unauthorised licensable activities
  • Permitted temporary licensable activities
  • Rights of entry to licensed premises
  • Police powers with regard to suspension and closure of licensed premises
  • The specific prohibitions for the sale of alcohol
  • The strengths of alcoholic drinks, and the effects of alcohol on the human body
  • The protection of children from harm
  • The responsible retail sale of alcohol


How long is the training course?

This is a one-day course and includes the final assessment for the qualification. 

Where does the training take place?

The course is held at Woodspeen Training premises, which are located in the centre of Huddersfield across from the train station.  The venue is easily accessible by car, train or bus and a detailed map is sent out with the conformation of booking and invoice.

How much does the course cost?

The course costs £180; this includes VAT, registration with the awarding body, examination fee and certification.

What does the assessment involve?

The exam is a 40-minute short multiple-choice question paper of 40 questions, which you have to get 28 out of 40 to pass.

What does the candidate get to say he/she has passed?

A nationally recognised certificate awarded by BIIAB stating the candidate has successfully achieved the BIIAB Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders

How soon does the candidate receive the results?

Examination results are generally sent to the centre within 5 days of sitting the exam, often this is much quicker.  The actual certificate follows within 2-3 weeks of sitting the exam.
